A few months ago, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Emily Zarka from PBS Digital Studios' Monstrum. From Dr. Zarka's website, "With a doctorate in Literature from Arizona State University, my expertise lies in monsters, the Gothic, and horror in literature, film, and folklore."
Last week they published their video about La Lechuza, in which I make a special appearance! La Lechuza seems to be everywhere these days!
I was asked to come on and share my insights on the winged harbinger of bad news. Dr. Zarka and I had a good time on and off camera. We traded book and movie recommendations and generally just geeked out about paranormal folklore. The work she does with Monstrum is so inspirational!
Before we started recording, I was asked what I would like my title in my lower-third to say. I'd been grappling with the idea of using the title/honorific "Folklorist." For some reason, probably a case of imposter syndrome, I had it stuck in my head that I needed to possess a degree or certificate qualifying me as such. But it all clicked in the moment, I was sitting in a room with professionals, who asked me to join them - as a professional.
Anyway, I am a Folklorist. A collector and distributor of stories and culture. And I hope you enjoy this episode of Monstrum.
